The Grassroots Revolution is a consolidation of the progressive ideas, policies and organizations that for too long have stood alone in the face of corporate hegemony; gaining little traction if their solutions did not bring profit to those in positions of power. By unifying the myriad brilliant ideas, solutions, strategies, and efforts of the millions who have dedicated their lives to making the world a better place, we will move our civilization toward true democracy, social and economic justice, and environmental recovery. Grassroots intends to direct discourse away from bi-partisan politics to a more wholistic system in which cooperation and respectful collaboration take place between numerous stakeholders representing all portions of society. We all can all see the need for change in the way the planet is being controlled and managed. We are inundated with the horrifying images of violence, poverty, oppression, and environmental destruction that result from conditions of inequality, injustice, and exploitation. For many years those of us living in relative comfort have been able to turn a blind eye to the suffering our “systems” are creating for humans and for the Earth. But now we are waking up. We see that the top 1% of wealth-holders (the elite) in our world are using their immense economic power to manipulate our governments into creating conditions in which their wealth can continue to grow, with no responsibility being borne for the costs to the environment, society, human rights, or global peace. The Elite appear to have no regard for the suffering their greed is creating for the remaining 99% (the grassroots). Welcome to Grassroots. An organized revolution of politics, society, economy and industry. There are many solutions to the problems we face on this planet. There are many solution makers who are working determinedly to see these solutions take hold in business and society. The Grassroots Revolution is here to unite the causes, to provide a mechanism to identify where we should be focusing our collective will and energy, and to put this collective will behind creating a future we can be proud of. As someone who has promoted progressive social, environmental, and governmental issues for over half of my life, I am no stranger to opposition. However, some of the interactions I have been having over the past few weeks have escalated to senseless bickering (over semantics, ideologies, definitions, generalizations, personal attacks, generational attacks, etc.) that seems to end up with both sides walking away feeling unheard, misunderstood, insulted and increasingly frustrated. These interactions bring to my attention that many of the things we dare to say from behind our screens would never be considered in face-to-face interactions - our mothers taught us better than that. As we realize from our experiences with text messaging, it is very difficult to get the true meaning of our words across through a keyboard; typing all the context of our thoughts is too time consuming and finger-cramping. Picture the world at peace. The fighting and bombing has stopped and the people are able to return to their homes and their families, taking up work to rebuild their damaged communities. The time of global terrorism has ended; we have come to see that we are all one on this Earth, and that we don’t want to fight our brothers and sisters, our mothers and fathers, our own children anymore. The weapons are melted down, the bombs are deactivated, and the production and sale of weapons to foreign countries are stopped; we will no longer fuel the violence of war. See yourself going to work only 3.5 days per week. No more Mondays. Everybody gets a half-day Friday. Every human being on the planet has a vested interest in making the world a better place; and whether we think that is true or not will determine if our civilization will rise or fall. As humans, we have empathy, compassion, giving, and mercy at the core of our being – these traits are keys to how we were able to survive and thrive as a species – by working together, creating civilizations and cultures that shared resources and innovations, in order to become successful in our environments. The narrative that our world is currently experiencing is one of extreme duality. Many people, especially those in powerful positions, live lives of outrageous wealth; wealth so extreme that it can often be viewed as excessive, wasteful, and wanton. On the other side, we see many more people living lives of poverty. Poverty so extreme that it often means malnutrition, lack of basic necessities such as shelter, access to clean water and sanitation, and lack of access to education and adequate medical care; conditions which often lead to social isolation and physical and mental illness. Proponents of the capitalist system that produces this dichotomy would have you believe that positioning in this system is justifiably earned, the result of choice and not of circumstance, and that all people are given equal opportunity to come out on the winning side of this equation. Why do we need a Revolution? After all, we have it pretty good here in Canada; free medical care, decent schools, most people have a pretty high standard of living... what's to complain about, right? And why go so far as to call for Revolution? Can't we trust that our government is doing right by it's citizens; keeping us safe and even prosperous, as individuals and as a nation? Also, aren't revolutions violent? I don't want to fight my own countrymen! A definition of Revolution is "a fundamental change in political power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time when the population rises up in revolt against the current authorities". I assert that current political and economic structures which govern our lives are creating extreme imbalances on our planet that cause great suffering and loss for many; while upholding a false sense of success for few.
